How much difference can there be in the specialized manufacturing processes and materials used, when each string manufacturing company claims that theirs is the best way to make strings? Check out these three brands out of about a thousand examples of available strings.

Advise:

Stronger, longer lasting, better sounding, better packaging, what the heck? Lots of claims. So who am I to determine what strings are best for you? I can’t and won’t. Unless you bring your guitar closer to the phone so I can hear you, I am at a disadvantage. This is confusing, isn’t it?

Realistically, string choice becomes very personal at some point, for example, when you find the right strings. then you will have a brand to swear by.

Bass guitar players and electric guitar players have radically different ideas on strings, as do acoustic guitar players and electric guitar players. Everybody has an opinion.

Simply put, it is a real enigma when you consider the volume of options. Consider this also, what gauge of string suits you best? For example strings come in different gauges or thickness of wire. Some are quite heavy, like bridge support wire and some are very lite gauge for string bending sissies like me.

One of the best strategies for choosing a string is to buy several sets of brands and types and go to town. It is cheap, fun and a good way to improve your string changing skills. Real world experience tells us that at least on electric guitars, most strings lose their brightness after about 45 minutes to an hour of hard playing. It’s true. none of them really last longer.
Bass players and acoustic strings last longer, depending on how much you play.

Incidentally, out of the three company’s that were chosen to use for comparison purposes, I enjoy the Pure Blues strings, this is my personal preference, now you choose your preference. Don’t take my word for it, buy some strings and have some fun.

OK, so you’ve read the other children party ideas, but you still aren’t sure what to do. Here’s another batch to get those juices flowing – you can do it, I know you can!:

· A day at the farm. Depending on the age level of the kids, this could be a fun one! Have a bunch of stuffed farm animals, or – better yet – have some adults dressed up as farm animals! Have the kids wear overalls and straw hats. If you have a field, you can take them for a hayride.

· Mad scientists! Think something along the lines of a “Mr. Wizard”-type party. Have the kids do simple little science experiments, like an erupting volcano or giant bubbles. Dress them up in white coats, big glasses, and hair standing on end – it could make for some great photographs to send home with them!

· A trip through space. If your group is smaller and easier to manage, decorate your basement with planets and glow-in-the-dark stars. Have a few adults dress up like aliens, and make-believe that you are taking a trip to the outer reaches of space.

Think about different ways you could decorate a room – a laboratory, space, a barn, etc. – and use that to fuel your children party ideas!

A favorite food in Asia for the past thousand years is called red yeast rice and it considered a traditional part of the dish most of us are familiar with, at least by name, called Peking duck.  The system of Traditional Chinese Medicine has put the dish to use by claiming that it assists the body in keeping a healthy circulatory system and promotes a healthy heart.  Its use has been documented back as long ago as the Tang imperial dynasty in China in the approximate year of 800 A.D.  There could possibly be a fair reason for the claim that it helps keep a good circulatory system, since current research has proven that it is pretty good at lowering your cholesterol.  But, what is this “red yeast rice”, exactly? 

Well, red yeast rice is produced by fermenting a mold called “monascus purpureus” that has been put on top of rice.  The natural ingredient mevinolin is supposedly what gives the dish its cholesterol lowering characteristic, since this ingredient is similar to that which doctors typically give a person to help lower high cholesterol, such as the drugs Zocor and Lipitor.  Even though we all need a certain amount of cholesterol in order to survive and be healthy, most of the time our own bodies produce enough of it to maintain survival.  We only actually need to obtain about twenty percent of our cholesterol from the food that we take in every day.  Red yeast rice (or mevinolin, whichever you want to say) blocks the enzyme in the liver that causes it to produce cholesterol. 

Even though this medicine food has been used in China for at least a millennia in the treatment of high cholesterol and maintaining a healthy circulatory system, it has only begun to see some use in the United States and other western countries.  Mevinolin is actually sold as a dietary supplement in some places and is available over the counter without a prescription.  

If you do happen to eat red yeast rice, it is not a good idea to eat it or take the mevinolin supplements if your doctor has already put you on Zocor or Lipitor.

Monascus purpureus is a red-purplish mold that is used primarily in Asian foods to provide color and was used for this long before food dyes were invented.  In addition to providing a healthy amount of color to a dish, it can also give the food a good flavor, too.
